INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES
This course is designed to prepare the
participant to give immediate care to a person who has
been injured or suddenly taken ill while in the officer/investigator/protective
agent's presence until more advanced help arrives.
You will be taught appropriate reactive
methods of treating injuries. This course provides
knowledge of medical emergencies, as well as signs and
symptoms these medical emergencies present so that the
officer/investigator/agent may be pro-active in
recognizing that a person may need immediate medical
attention. You will be presented with well
selected words of encouragement, evidence of willingness
to help, and promotion of confidence by demonstration of
competence.
The participant learns that he/she must
deal with the whole situation, assuring his/her own, as
well as, the patient's safety, scene assessment, the
importance of calling for advanced help immediately, and
providing good patient care in the meantime.
The participant will learn what not to
do, as well as what he/she can do to avoid errors that
are frequently made by untrained persons through
well-meant but misguided efforts. The participant
will also know that his/her first aid knowledge and
skill can mean the difference between life and death,
between temporary and permanent disability, and between
rapid recovery and long hospitalization.
